Decide what your students will take away from your course
Backwards design starts at the finish line. Before choosing readings or lectures, name what students will be able to do when the course is over — then cut your topic list down to what serves those goals.
Why start at the end? (and why less is more)
The three core elements of a course — learning objectives, assessments, and instructional strategies — only work when they point at the same destination. Starting from goals keeps everything aligned.
When choosing topics, distinguish between covering material and students actually learning it. Cramming in too many topics crowds out the practice and feedback that make essential content stick — as physicist and Nobel laureate Carl Wieman put it, “coverage is the enemy.” This matters even more online, where each module has a fixed weekly footprint and there is no lecture period to stretch.
A practical approach: list every topic you could cover, then cut the list drastically. Build the course around the essentials, and let trimmed topics become optional enrichment or a further-reading list.

What makes a good assessment online?
An assessment is any student work you can evaluate against a goal. Common options in online courses include auto-graded quizzes (recall and concept checks), discussion posts and peer replies (critique and application), papers and problem sets, projects and portfolios, recorded presentations or demonstrations, and reflective journals.
Match the assessment to the verb in your goal: if students should analyze, a multiple-choice quiz alone won't show it. And keep your own grading load in mind — every assessment you assign is something you (or an autograder) must respond to.

Now decide how the essential topics will unfold across the course, and what mix of activities will move students from where they start to your goals.
Ways to organize a course (and how to pick)
There is no single right structure — the right one is whichever best supports your goals. Whatever you choose, a course should build: start with foundational pieces, and progress toward synthesis and integration, so students can connect each new idea to the ones before it. Think of the course as a narrative: an introduction that frames the key questions, a development that explores them, and a conclusion where threads converge or new questions emerge.
To choose a teaching strategy, work backward: What must students be able to do at the end? What skills and knowledge does that require? Then ask what activities give them enough practice in those skills, and how to sequence the activities so skills build. Online, a reliable weekly pattern works well — for example: absorb (short videos or readings) → interact (discussion or group work) → produce (an assignment or quiz), repeated with rising complexity.
In a sentence or two: what weekly mix of activities will students do, and how will the work grow more complex as the course proceeds?
Map it onto your modules
Distribute your essential topics, activities, and assessments across the modules (weeks). Rearrange until the workload feels realistic for students — and for you.
Scheduling tips for online courses
- Keep a steady rhythm. Use the same due days every week (e.g., initial posts Wednesday, replies and assignments Sunday). Predictability is what replaces the structure of class meetings.
- Spread the workload. Stagger major deadlines so students aren't slammed in one module — and so your grading doesn't pile up either.
- Leave room for feedback. If one assignment builds on another, schedule enough time between them for students to receive and use your feedback.
- Check the calendar. Note religious holidays, breaks, and campus events. Avoid splitting tightly connected activities (e.g., a case and its discussion) across a break.
- Build in slack. Keep one module lighter than the rest — for catch-up, an unexpected opportunity, or an activity that runs long.
- Expect to iterate. A good schedule usually takes several passes before topics, assessments, and workload all line up.

First, plan the practice. For each goal, design activities that build the skills and knowledge its assessment will measure — so nothing on an assessment comes as a surprise. Then distribute those activities across the module cards below.
Choosing activities that prepare students
Work backward from each assessment: what skills and knowledge does it demand, and what practice will build them? Students should get low-stakes practice — with feedback — in every skill before it counts toward a grade.
Online, activities usually mix three moves: absorb (short videos, readings, worked examples), interact (discussions, group work, peer review), and produce (practice quizzes, drafts, problem sets, simulations). Match the practice to the verb in your goal: if the assessment asks students to analyze a case, they need practice analyzing cases — not just watching you do it.
